In the 14th and 15th centuries, a great plague ravaged Europe and Asia, and millions of people died.  According to historical archives, four men known as "thieves" were able steal from the dead and dying. When captured and brought to the king, in exchange for their secret he offered them leniency. They shared when annointing themselves with certain herbs and spices, they would be immune to the plague.  The king shared this information so the people of the lands can benefit .
